Samson Babatunde ADEBAYO, Ph.D. – Biostatistician/M&E Specialist
Samson is the current Team Lead in Data Research and Mapping Consult Ltd., a seasoned researcher and academia, obtained a B.Sc. (First Class Honors), M.Sc. (Unilorin, Nigeria) and Ph.D. (Univ. of Munich, Germany) degrees in Statistics with specialization in Biostatistics/Applied Statistics. Samson is a Professor of Biostatistics and has anchored the conduct of national surveys on HIV & AIDS, Malaria, Family Planning, Maternal and Child Health and other sexual reproductive health. To his credit, he successfully facilitated the conduct of 2005, 2007 and 2012 National HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey (NARHS), 2005 Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS), 2007 and 2010 Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Survey (IBBSS), 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 national Most at Risk Community Level Survey among key Target Risk Groups in Nigeria (a study through which effectiveness of Peer Education Plus (PEP) model was assessed). Thereafter, PEP was adapted as a tool for national HIV & AIDS prevention intervention strategy among key Target Groups by the Nigeria National Agency for the Control of AIDS. His roles on these surveys included survey designing, protocol development, design & pre-test of questionnaire, securing of Institutional Review Board (ethical) approval, conduct pilot study, facilitating Training of Trainers, training of survey personnel, field monitoring, development of an analysis plan, data analysis, report writing and organizing a dissemination workshop. He has successfully and effectively performed all these roles. He was the lead consultant on the design of 2013 IBBSS. Samson was part of the team that developed the Nigerian National Response Information Management System (NNRIMS) and participated in the Training of Trainers and step-down training of NNRIMS in some states of Nigeria.
He possesses skills to conduct complex data analysis and standard or scientific report writing. He is computer literate and proficient in using some statistical packages such as STATA, SAS, SPSS, BayesX, Splus among others. Samson has published articles on HIV & AIDS, Family Planning, Malaria, Maternal and Child Health (including Malnutrition and Breastfeeding), etc. in reputable journals. He has lectured at the Universities of Ilorin, Nigeria and Liverpool, UK for about twelve years (in total). During his career as an academia, he has taught many causes in Statistics/Biostatistics and has supervised students’ dissertations and theses towards the award of B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. His research interest includes Mathematical Modeling of HIV/AIDS situation in Nigeria. He currently collaborates with Prof Ludwig Fahrmeir and Prof Christian Heumann (Department of Statistics University of Munich, Germany, Prof. E. Afolabi Bamgboye (College of Medicine University of Ibadan, Nigeria), Prof. Benjamain A. Oyejola and Prof. E. Teju Jolayemi (Department of Statistics, University of Ilorin, Nigeria). He has wealth of practical experience in monitoring and evaluation of HIV & AIDS prevention activities, Malaria research, Family Planning and Reproductive Health interventions in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. His current areas of research include operation research to evaluate interventions on HIV & AIDS, Family Planning, Maternal and Child Health, counterfeiting of medicines and other food products, etc. He specializes in spatial and semiparametric modeling using Bayesian approach. Samson was an academic scholar of the University of Ilorin and a German scholar. To his credits, he has co-published books and Chapters in statistics and public health textbooks, and has also presented in many international conferences. Currently, he is a visiting Professor of Statistics to the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria and University of Abuja, Nigeria.
